Icebreaker specializes in offering the broadest selection of high performance New Zealand merino wool base layers and outdoor clothing throughout North America and New Zealand.

The Sum was contacted by Icebreaker’s Vancouver headquarters to help re-design their current staff retail home page and update the visuals within the site. The objective: Design a home page with a clear navigational direction, which would either encourage new staff to take an online training course or guide trained staff into their retail section where they could find great deals and promotions.

As one of eight Master Instructors of the Speech Level Singing™ technique in the world, Spencer Welch is an expert in vocal development and application.

The goal was to freshen up the look of his old site and to use the screen real estate in a more effective way. We transformed the home page into a “billboard” of easy-to-access information that gives potential and current students a snapshot of Spencer Welch Vocal Studio (SWVS) and guides them through the various resources offered through site. The Sum worked collaboratively with the client to organize the content and give it a clear visual hierarchy to ensure smooth navigation and access. Click here to check it out!

Every so often we have a client that lets us do whatever we want for a design (aka. Dream Client).

Vancouver New Music has been one of our Dream Clients for the past couple of years and here is the latest poster and brochure design for their Sonic Tonic event. That’s all we hafta say.

The new website for the San Francisco Aquarium of the Bay is up! Click here to check it out.

TH= SUM had the pleasure of working with The Spider to help develop the creative direction for the aquarium’s new website. Our challenge was to update the design of the website in a family-friendly way while retaining key design elements from their previous website. Large amounts of content were organized in a way that showed a clear hierarchy and directed user experience.

Great project and we look forward to visiting soon!

After a year-long design process, the exterior signage for the Seymour-Capilano Water Filtration Plant (SCFP) has been installed!

Working in partnership with Bliss Creative, Bufo Inc. and Artcraft Graphics, The Sum has been working with Metro Vancouver to develop and design interpretive graphics for its world-class water filtration plant. The objective: design beautiful graphics that complement the natural environment and educate the public about the plant and its sustainability goals (LEED Silver).

The creative direction is a refreshing change from traditional approaches to park signage, and old water pipes were reused and retrofitted to create new graphic structures; visitors can even walk through a massive pipe as they enter the trail.

We are currently working on interior signage for the plant and look forward to posting an update soon!

So if you’ve been paying attention, since this site’s been up there hasn’t been much activity in the “blog” section. Partly because we’ve been busy but also because that, up until now, the blog didn’t have a backend. Yep. All this time -  a falsie. Well, I finally got around to finishing it. What we have now is a WordPress powered blog and a very basic theme (Hooray!).

So, sorry if we misled you. Hope you’ll forgive us. But at least now you know – it wasn’t you. It was us.

Well it’s been a long minute but we’re finally here! No more making excuses and frankly, the joke was getting old. We’re excited about this new direction; a design company with a website, how novel! Although we have to admit, we’re surprised at how far we got despite not having one. Thanks to all our amazing clients who trusted us with their projects enough to overlook our non-website status: We wouldn’t be here without your support!

So now that that’s out of the way, a little Q + A about the new site:

Q: What’s that swirly cloud thing on the homepage?
A: It’s a swirly cloud.

Q: Oh… And what’s with that shadowy character on the site’s footer? He’s a bit scary.
A: That’s Sasquatch. And he’s not so scary, just misunderstood.

Q: Why Sasquatch?
A: Being based in Vancouver we feel an affinity with all our Pacific Northwest neighbours, but the sasquatch in particular holds a very special place in our hearts. Did you know “sasquatch” means “hairy man”? Which neither of us are. So that’s like, ironic.

Q: And have any of you ever seen a sasquatch?
A: Chris has come the closest. Once while he was camping in Oregon he thought he saw one. But on closer inspection it was just a yeti.

Q: Fair enough. And in your work section, the “OTHER” category..?
A: That’s where we hope to put any projects that may not fit into the other categories. We see it being less client driven and more exploratory in nature. Also, having it there will hopefully inspire us to fill it with fun stuff. Stay tuned!

So it’s been a long time coming, but here we are. We hope you enjoy the site and check back often for all the latest news and events going on at The Sum!
